Why a New Logo?

Columbia Pops’ previous logos either contain icons from pop culture to which the orchestra has no copyright, or are inadequate to represent the organization’s professional musicianship.

Creating a new logo that does not rely on popular icons is an opportunity to improve professional brand image and avoid legal disputes. A more appealing design will increase club exposure within the Columbia community.

Research & Prep

Clarifying Task

I first discussed design goals, budget, and aesthetic criteria with our 16-person E-Board about design goals:

  1. Minimalistic

  2. Conveys professionalism

  3. Columbia’s color palette: blue

  4. Limit colors to 3 or less due to shirt printing budget

Studying Famous Designs

To gain inspiration, I researched logos of symphonic and pops orchestras around the world, annotating their strengths. Key take-aways I noted are:

  1. Incorporate letters into graphic shapes

  2. No subtle, ambiguous hints

  3. Musical elements can include: instruments, concert space, important musical roles, seating arrangement

Based on gathered information, I aim to design a minimalistic logo that conveys professionalism and vigor of Columbia Pops. Non-members should easily understand that we are a pop-music orchestra just by looking at the logo.
